About Rusty Nuts M/C NZ

A backgrounder on the Rusty Nuts M/c. Where we come from, and how we got our name.

About the RUSTY NUTS Motorcycle Club. In 1987 The Rusty Nuts grew out of a previous group of riders that used to visit my (me, being Lee Hurley) motorcycle wrecking business" The Motorcycle Factory" (now closed) at Otahuhu, here in Auckland (New Zealand).

We used to party together and adopted the name the "BOOTBURNERS M/C" after the rather unsanitary habit of putting old boots on the BBQ when the steaks were cooking. When a couple of us were discussing (in the Prospect of Howick Pub) where to go for a ride, we decided to go to Bill & JO's when one of the younger guys expressed the view that across town was too far to go. He was promptly informed that he was a wimp, and us old guys could ride 1000 miles a day with no sweat. The bet was made that we couldn't ride 1000 miles inside 24 hours.

A day or two later I had done just that. Then several of the other guys decided to do it as well, and we thought we would make it into an event open to other riders. After some discussion, Myself and AJ thought that our 'BOOTBURNERS M/C' would give the impression that we were a group of boot scraping, go fast, knee dragging, all out racing type riders. Not an impression we wanted to give for the introduction of such an event to the riding calendar.

After some consideration we chose the name RUSTY NUTS as we could think of nothing that moved slower, (the fact that RUSTY NUTS need to be lubricated, before they even think about moving is purely incidental).

The name has stuck, and is now one of the best known club names in New Zealand motorcycle circles, indeed we have had riders take part in our events from USA, UK, Germany, Finland, Australia.

The RUSTY NUTS themselves are limited to around 21 active members, membership being by invitation only. (Members are usually drawn from the ranks of riders who attend events) but we do have strong family ties.

We have some overseas members in the UK and some very good and valued friends in the USA.

We are always happy to offer visiting riders assistance when they choose to ride New Zealand. From maps and advice to giving ideas of places to visit.

NOTE: We have had several approaches from overseas clubs to use our name - we have not allowed this and anyone using our name is NOT doing so with our approval or permission. Stealing a clubs name is pretty low. If anyone knows of this happening we would like to hear from you so we can deal with it.
