The Southern Cross Road Rally

The Southern Cross Road Rally was born out of a discussion over a few beers at the Rusty Nuts Ohawe Beach rally in 1990.

The second longest running event in the Rusty Events calender the Southern Cross Road Rally started in 1991 continues still. It is held every two years and comprises riding to the four extreme points off New Zealand, accessable by road. They are Cape Reinga (North), East Cape, Cape Egmont (West), and Sterling Point, Bluff (South). Over a 6 or 7 day period. All riders must check in at each checkpoint which are only open for 1 hour from noon to 1pm on the alloted day. The start point is varied from year to year. From start to finish all riders cover approximately 6300km. All must cross Cook Straight between the North and South Islands twice. On completion all riders and pillions are rewarded with a Southern Cross Road Rally badge. There is a after run function at the end of the event.
